Root Canal Treatment in Beachmere

Older woman smilingEndodontic treatment (root canal therapy) is a special type of restoration that treats the deeper nerve canal of infected teeth. Root canals are often one of the last lines of defence against tooth removal. A prompt root canal treatment can eliminate tooth pain and preserve your smile for several years to come.

How Do I Know I Need a Root Canal?

A root canal is recommended when your tooth has experienced significant trauma or the nerve inside of it is inflamed or infected. The tooth may show visible signs of abscessing or a dying nerve, such as

  • A small blister on the gums
  • Sensitivity to hot temperatures
  • Pain when biting
  • Visible darkening of the tooth
  • Abscess visible on an X-ray
  • A history of past trauma to the tooth

What to Expect

Depending on your tooth, a root canal may require one or two separate visits (we’ll evaluate on a tooth-by-tooth basis). The process involves numbing your tooth and removing any areas of decay. When we access the nerve, those tissues are cleaned out using special instruments. Next, your nerve canals are disinfected and filled to prevent any bacteria from entering those spaces.

Most teeth will need a protective crown on top of them but some can be restored with a normal filling. Our practice is one of the only ones in the area to offer same-day crown options.

Do Root Canals Hurt?

Contrary to what you may have heard, getting a root canal isn’t any more uncomfortable than having a filling completed. The only difference is that a root canal takes a little more time to complete. You won’t feel any different throughout the process.
